Congress dominates in election of local body chairpersons

Udaipur:BJPcandidateGovindSingh TakisnewMayoroftheUdaipurMunicipal Corporation, Govind Singh Tak received 46 votes, which was 2 votes more than BJP councillors elected in the UMC elections, the results for which were declaredon19November. Congresscandidate for the seat of Mayor, Arun Tak, received 20 votes, which is equal to the number of seats that the Congress won in the said election. 3 of the winning candidates did not cast their vote and one selected NOTA.The Congress candidates were elected as heads of 35 civic bodies, while the BJP contestants won in 13 seats and an independent in one. The ward councillors elected chairpersons in 46 local bodies, situated in 24 districts,onTuesday,as thechairpersons inthreecivicbodies—MakranaMunicipal Council and Rupbas and Nimbahera municipalities—wereearlier elected unopposed. Abhijit Kumar of the Congress, who unsuccessfully fought the 2019 Lok Sabha election, was electedMayorofBharatpur Municipal Corporation. BJP’sSushilaKanwarand Govind Singh Tak won as Mayors of Municipal Corporations in Bikaner and Udaipur, respectively.Among the 17 Municipal Councils, the Congress candidateswereelectedchairpersons in 13, the BJP in three and an independent in one. The Congress candidates won as chairpersons in 21 of the 29 municipalitiesandtheBJP candidates ineight. Inthemunicipal election held on November16,theCongresshadobtained a clear majority in 20 local bodies, while the BJP’s majority was confined to six. Prior to the election, the Congress and the BJP controlled 21 municipal bodies each and the remaining seven were with others. Pradesh Congress Committee presidentSachinPilot,whoisalsotheDeputy Chief Minister, said the election results had proved that the people in the State were“fullysatisfied”withthegovernment’s performance. “The Congress party is actively working for extending the benefits of welfare policies to the masses. Ourchairpersonsandcouncillorswillwork hard for development of urban areas.”
