Theatre is a universal language of harmony

Jaipur:Inmoderndayparlance, we often use the terms Drama,PlayandTheatreinterchangeably without adhering to the characteristics they manifest in different domains. All these are aesthetic art forms but their representations and productions make themdifferentfromeachother. An international conference titled Rethinking Theatre , Dramatics and Sustainable Studies RTDS 2019 was held on 15-16 Oct. 2019 at Amity University, Jaipur. It was an ocassion of an exchange of knowledge, research innovations, and practicalmethods,examining the future appli cations and impli cations of performance work. Drama can support language learning at the university level and can also support learners in acquiring professional competencies. The conference tried to explore forms of drama in language teaching, its role in making learning holistic and memorable, improving learners "social and personal competencies". The two-day long conference witnessed significant keynoteaddresses,paperpresentations, round table discussions as well as theatre workshops and presentation of skits. The conference was attended by scholars from University of Rajasthan, Jaipur,sUniversityofToronto, Un i v e r s i t y o f M a l a y a , Malayasia, Sciences Po Bordeaux,Bordeaux,France, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, OP Jindal Global University, Sonipat . The conference had a unique multi-lingual and multi-culturalthrust,asexperts and participants will be from various disciplines such as English Studies, French & Francophone Studies, Hindi literature, German Studies, SpanishStudies and Chinese language and literature. Keki N. Daruwala, Padmashri Awardee author was the chief guest. Prof. Jonathan Hart, UniversityofToronto,Canada made a virtual presentation in a plenary session. Prof. Sharmani Patricia Gabriel, University Malaya, Kuala Lumpurdeliveredaplenaryon Shakespeare in Malayasia. Prof. Vridhagiri Ganeshan, Emeritus Professor, EFLU, (NRI Atlanta) spoke on the Shakespeareantheatreandits comparision with Kalidas’s AbhigyanShakuntalam.Prof. Nibir Ghosh, Emeritus Professor,AgraCollege,Agra shared his views on the various dramatic responses to theatre.Prof.LudovicRenard, SciencesPoBordeaux, spoke on the place of Drama in Politics and world affairs. Prof. H.S.Chandalia, Professor in the department ofEnglish,JanardanRaiNagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth participated in a round table and made a presentation on the folk theatre of Rajasthan. He also chaired a plenary sessioninwhichProf.NibirGhosh, Agra was the main speaker. The inaugural function was chaired by Vice Chancellor of Amity University Prof.Arun Patil and theValedictory function was chaired by Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Amit Jain. Mr. Ranjeet Singh , President of Indian People’s Theatre Association was the chief Guest. Nearly two hundred scholars participated in the conference, saidtheconvenor of the conference Dr. Deepa Chakravarty.Dr.ManojKumar and Dr. Swati Kumari offered a vote of thanks.
