Udaipur: The 50-year old beneficiary of the first heart transplant done in Gujarat at CIMS Hospital, Ahmedabad has been successfully discharged.
The path-breaking surgery done in December saw a special 6 minute 22 seconds green corridor being set up in Bhavnagar and a 14-minute corridor established in Ahmedabad to transfer the harvested heart in a record 82 minutes.
He was suffering from Ischameic Dialated Cardio Myopathy. The life-saving experience and a pioneering initiative have now strengthened his family's belief in organ donation and they have pledged to contribute their organs for the future benefit of medical science.
The patient, a resident of Jamnagar, after a 60-day stay at CIMS is stable and recuperating and has been asked to stay in Ahmedabad for further monitoring of health for 30 days.
He was treated by a team of doctors lead by Dr. Dhiren Shah and Dr. Milan Chag. Other Doctors involved were Dr. Chintan Seth, Dr. Manan Desai, Dr. Dhaval Naik, Dr. Niren Bhavsar and Dr. Hiren Dholakiya.
According to doctors, organ donation in India is laden with risks of infections and it was no different for the patient.
For 15 days prior to the surgery and 20 days after the surgery he was kept on life-support. He contracted pneumonia and had irregular heartbeats, the reasons why the normal functioning of lungs and kidney were affected. "Like a new born child, we gradually took every measure within our limits to grow the patient's internal immunity and he responded well to the treatment.
For CIMS Hospital, Ahmedabad, this is a landmark achievement and will go down as a reference point for future such surgeries.
We wish the patient a healthy life ahead and he will be monitored for some more time before he heads back to normal life.
His family in all the struggle has been left inspired and have pledged to donate organs," said Dr. Keyur Parikh, Chairman, CIMS Hospital.
