Indra in sky, Narendra in Delhi and Bhupendra in Gujarat… Dada becomes Chief Minister

New Delhi: Those who understand the politics of NarendraModi closelyarewell aware that Modi’s thinking begins where thinking of a common politician ends. He is such a public leader that it is difficult for even seasoned politicians togaugethinkingof Modi.Once again Modi has startled all by picking up a strange person Bhupendra Rajanikant Patel as Chief Minister of Gujarat, while big names of grand leaders of the state were in the discussion in the race to become new chief minister, like- Union Cabinet Minister for Health Mansukh Mandavia, Union Fisheries andAnimalHusbandryMinister Purushottam Rupala, Deputy Chief minister of Gujarat Nitin Patel and the president of Gujarat Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) CR Patil. Not even once the name of Bhupendra Patel emergedintherace.Unaware of this, he was watering the plants at his home on Sunday. In the meeting of the legislature party in the last row like a normal legislature, he himself was surprised when his name was declared. Inthewholemelee, apeculiar thing is that Bhupendra Patel became a legislature for the first time, but he was made chief minister ignoring many seniorlegislatureselectedmultipletimes.Withthis, anewslogan is echoing in Gujarat, ‘Indrainsky,NarendrainDelhi and Bhupendra in Gujarat….’ New chief minister of Gujaratisdecidedwithintwenty four hours of Vijay Rupani’s r e s i g n a ti o n . Na m e o f BhupendraPatel startledallas his name for the post never came forth; rather his name was announced immediately after the meeting of legislatures. Vijay Rupani proposed the name of Bhupendra Bhai Patel in the meeting of legislatures and Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel seconded it.Ontheoccasioncabinetministers Narendra Singh Tomar, Prahlad Joshi andBhupendra Yadav and party organisation SecretaryB.Santoshwerealso present as central observers. It is said that Bhupendra Patel is a low profile leader, he has got a strong hold on the Patidar community. He has beenassociatedwithRashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for a long time. He is considered to be in the good books ofModi-Shah.BhupendraPatel took oath for the post of chief minister on Monday. New CM ofGujaratisonly12thpassand is a diploma holder in civil engineering.Along with being leader of Kadwa Patidar community, he has been taken as very closetoAnandiBenPatel, formerchiefministerofthestate andcurrentlygovernorofUttar Pradesh. In the 2017 legislativeassemblyonAnandiBen’s refusal to contest the election, Patel had registered victory from her Ghatlodia seat of the Ahmedabad district with a record 1.17 votes. Workers of his constituency call Bhupendra Patel with the nickname ‘Dada’. Prior to getting fully active in politics, he was chairman of the Ahmedabad urban development authority (AUDA). Not only that when Narendra Modi was chief minister of Gujarat then during 1999-2001 Patel remained chairman of the standing committee of the Ah m e d a b a d M u n i c i pa l Corporation,whileduring2008- 10heremainedvicechairman of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation School Board. During 2010 to 2015 he remained councilor of the Thaltej ward of Ahmedabad only. Now Bhupendra is not short of challenges too. To accommodate senior leaders in the council of ministers and partyorganizationandgetBJP wintheGujaratassemblyelections is not an easy task. It is not forthe first time that an unknown leader like Bhupendr Patel has become chief minister. Prior to this Modi has already experimented in many states, likeHariyana, Maharashtra, Goa,Karnatak, Uttarakhand, Assam, Himachal etc. which indicates that inBJP itisnoteasyforthosetoremain in discussions for the race of chief minister or minister and get the post in lottery.
