Tender Roots Academy of Performing Arts in association with the Komal Kothari School of Music launches the Kamaycha project.

Today, the 4th March is the birth anniversary of the legendary musicologist, scholar, Padma Bhushan Komal Kothari.

He dedicated his life to discovering and propagating the folk heritage of Rajasthan, especially the musical heritage of the Manganiyars and the Langas.

After his demise, and with the fast-changing socio-economic realities, the folk musicians, especially the younger generation no longer feels confident about their art being able to support them.

One of the worst hit is Kamaycha, the instrument which is very backbone of Manganiyar music. Like any other evolved instrument, it requires time and dedicated hard work to excel in playing the Kamaycha.  The youngsters feel attracted to other instruments that can give them quick results. Hence, with a view to sensitize the young manganiyars to the beauty and depth of the kamaycha, and, to encourage them to take it up as their long-term instrument, Kamaycha project has taken off today.

It will entail senior Kamaycha players teaching young Manganiyar boys the art of playing Kamaycha.

In the process we also hope to see a revival and rejuvenation of this instrument.

Hakam Khan of village Sanwada, Jaisalmer, is the first Kamaycha player who will teach two young Manganiyar boys  Sarvar and firm form his village.

Under the MERI KALA MERRI PEHCHAN project of the Tender Roots Academy, both the master and the disciples will be given monthly scholarships. The progress will be monitored every month to avoid any drop in the enthusiasm in participation. The project also aims at creating opportunities of performance in due course.

We sincerely hope that this effort leads to the young Manganiyars taking pride in their heritage and put in efforts to ensure the art of playing Kamaycha is alive.
