One Needs to Declass Oneself to Understand the Folk

Lucknow.A national Webinar was organized by Jai Narayan Mishra PG College Lucknow on 24th May, 2020. The webinar was titled “The Matrix of Indian Folk Literature”. Prof. H.S.Chandalia of Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, Udaipur, Prof. T.S.Chandramouli of Andhra Pradesh and Dr. Suchitra Avasthi of Uttarakhand Open University, Nanital were the guest speakers in the Webinar. Nearly 1084 delegates registered for the webinar and to make it available to all it was streamed live on Youtube also. Addressing the webinar Prof. H.S.Chandalia said that folk literature is truly democratic because it represents multiple voices, it is a community production and it expresses a shared feeling. It is collective and can always transform itself with the needs of time. In folk literature there is plurality and immense reflection of composite culture. He said that in order to understand folk literature one needs to declass oneself and mingle with the masses. He said that millions of people walking on roads to go back to their home are the real folk and they are writing the epics of our times with the blood of their feet on national highways.

Noted Indian English Poet and Academic Prof. T.S.Chandramouli said that Folk is diverse which is its strength. He said that folk literature is closely linked with music and dance. It is performance based. He gave several examples of folk art forms of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamilnadu and Karnataka. Dr. Suchitra Avasthi from Uttarakhand Open University talked of the representation of women and their struggles in the folk songs of Uttarakhand. She said that the folklorists of Uttarakhand were progressive in their approach and recorded the plight of women who had to suffer because of the migration of youth to the plains in search of livelihood.

Prof.S.D.Sharma, Principal of the College chaired the webinar while the convenor Dr. S.C.Hajela introduced the theme. Dr. Siddharth Singh introduced the guest speakers
