Adviser to Iran's foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif dies from coronavirus

Hossein Sheikholeslam, an adviser to Iran's foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, died from coronavirus yesterday.

He was a veteran and revolutionary diplomat who took part in the 1979 US embassy hostage crisis as a student.

Iran is struggling to contain the rapid spread of coronavirus which has infected more than 4700 people and killed at least124 people in the country so far. The country today announced 17 more deaths from the novel coronavirus.

COVID-19 has also claimed the lives of other high-profile Iranian politicians and officials, including an advisor to the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Other deaths linked to the virus include an MP from Gilan, one of the worst-hit provinces in the country. Tehran MP Fatemeh Rahbar is currently in a coma after being infected with the novel coronavirus.
