"Phata Poster Nikla Blockbuster”: Box Office Gets its Life Back

In 2023, Bollywood experienced a magnificent Box Office success with several films fetching over ₹500 crores. Besides the financial success, it was very heartening to see cinema theatres making a comeback after facing the challenges of pandemic. Shah Rukh Khan had an impressive  and a standout year with Pathaan and Jawan, which surpassed ₹1000 crore, while Sunny Deol surprised everyone around with Gadar 2 earning ₹687 crore. Rajinikanth at 73 proved age is just a number with Jailer's massive collection of ₹605 crore.  Film expert and enthusiast Akshay Rathi credited the astounding success of these films to understanding the audience preferences and demand. Even films like “Leo” and “Animal” which got mixed reviews showed the industry's resilience in the year 2023. The Deol legacy continued when Bobby Deol became fans’ favourite for his  brief but impactful role in Animal which earned a whooping amount of ₹850 crore globally. Negative reviews had non-existent impact on these movies.
It is highly expected that Bollywood will experience success in a similar way in 2024 too. The vibes are positive. As Siddharth Anand is gearing up for a powerful start to 2024 with the release of the film "Fighter," after the success of "Pathaan." Film expert Akshay Rathi expresses optimism, reflecting on the lessons learned in 2023. He highlights the much exciting lineup of films for 2024, including "Pushpa 2," "Singham 3," Aamir Khan's December release, and Ajay Devgn's projects like "Maidaan" and "Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha" to "Shaitan."  Akshay Kumar brings "Bade Miyan Chote Miyan" and another film, while a potential project with hints of collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan in Sujoy Ghosh's film is in the works. Varun Dhawan's collaboration with Atlee is also on the horizon. Rathi expects these big entertainers to capture audiences’ attention nationwide, contributing to the industry's ongoing success. Additionally, there's a growing trend among actors like Shah Rukh and Kareena Kapoor to prioritize content and substance over glamour particularly in medium-budget films, which signals a willingness to experiment. Girish Johar, famous film trade and business analyst, looks forward with hope and anticipates a prosperous 2024, emphasizing the importance of medium-budget films alongside big-budget releases for an all round thriving industry. He shows unwavering confidence that the diverse upcoming films in 2024 will resonate with audiences, ensuring stability, vivid commercial landscape and continued sustainable success for the film industry.
