“Intestinal Bleeding successfully treated by performing BATO” Udaipur: Geetanjali Medical College & Hospital’s Neuro Vascular Interventional Radiologist Dr. Seetaram Barath successfully saved 16 years young boy suffering from internal bleeding in small intestine by performing BATO; a life saving procedure. The team of doctors includes Gastroenterologist Dr. Pankaj Gupta, Anesthetist Dr. Rajendra, ICU Doctors Dr. Shubhkaran Sharma & Dr. Javed and nursing staff. It has been claimed as the first successful case in the medical history of Rajasthan.
Sagwada resident, Gajendra Meena, 16 years old, was a patient with persistent symptoms of anxiety, nausea, black motion, and blood colored heavy vomiting, low blood pressure and internal bleeding in frequent intervals. On consultation to Gastroenterologist Dr. Pankaj Gupta, endoscopy was performed which confirmed the internal bleeding from the first part of the duodenum. Since then the patient was shifted to ICU & investigation of CT Scan was also performed, where it showed bleeding in liver, which was coming from small intestine. It also presented a bunch of veins, formerly called as ruptured ectopic varices, and was bleeding as the portal vein of intestine was blocked.
Since these varices can’t be treated with endoscopic procedures, so the patient was then referred to Neuro Vascular Interventional Radiologist Dr. Seetaram Barath. Dr. Barath then chose Balloon Anti-grade Trans venous Obliteration of Varices, (BATO) procedure to treat the patient.
“The patient was shifted to cath lab where through liver a balloon catheter was inserted near the ruptured ectopic varices and was blocked to stop bleeding. Internal bleeding may lead to life threatening if not timely intervene by super specialty doctor. The patient was then moved to ICU where dedicated & compassionate care of doctors made the patient recover well. If the patient would not have been treated by this procedure then he may had to opt for an open surgery which could be complicated,”
