Udaipur, as usual, celebrated the festival of light with great enthusiasm. The homes and markets were properly decked up and people spent good time and amount on shopping. Market presented a plethora of options to the buyers and that is why even people who went out just for a walk across the market returned with bags full of stuff. Shopping malls are now a regular part of shopping culture in Udaipur and people now use these huge and one-stop shop destinations to do some real and planned shopping. But then, the city is a traditional town at its heart so the first choice for people remains the traditional and set markets like Sooraj Pole, Hathi Pole, Bapu Bazar, Ashwini Market, Walled City, and so on. Amid all the noise about using or rejecting Chinese stuff, people used less lighting or candles to light up their houses besides the traditional earthen diyas.Other decoratives like Rangoli stencils, stickers, and plastic stuff were used as usual to make the house stand out. The traditional rangoli made by terracotta and lime paint still is done as part of inviting goddess Lakshmi to the house for prosperity.Albeit most of the ways to celebrate Diwali have got modernized but the soul of the festival still is the same as before. The ingredients of Pooja are now ordered online but the process to do the pooja is still traditional. Arti might be played on the phone but the sentiments with the arti are still pious and powerful. The tradition of sharing sweets with the neighbors and friends is still very much in practice in Udaipur while in most of the metro cities, people simply courier sweets and wish each other through messages and calls. Though the city is transforming into a metro city but it has managed to keep the roots, which is indeed a commendable thing.
