Geetanjali Hospital’s Onco-Surgeons’ successful initiative

“HIPEC Technique, a new hope for terminal cancer patients”

Oncology Surgeons of Geetanjali Medical College & Hospital saved a cancer patient by removing the sections of affected areas (Third stage Carcinoma Ovary) and administering chemotherapy directly at the cancerous cells by using modern technology called as CRS (Cytoreduction Surgery) and HIPEC.

“The 36-years old woman patient, who was in the advanced stage of carcinoma, is expected to live a healthy normal life more. She recovered well as a result of tedious and tiring eleven- hours long procedures. Besides the Cytoreductive Surgery (An extensive surgery that involves the removal of Uterus, Gall Bladder, Ovary, Part of Intestines, Lymph Nodes and Abdominal Wall which covers the abdomen) that lasted for nine hours, chemotherapy was applied directly on the affected cells in a process that is medically termed as “HIPEC or Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy,” said Dr. Ashish Jakhetiya, the treating cancer surgeon.

“Sources revealed that the patient has been suffering from cancer since long and even underwent three cycles of chemotherapy few months ago. However, the local resident Ms. Suhana (Name changed) complained of retention of urine and further investigations of CT Scan revealed that there is a mass occupying the ovary of the patient and small grapes like gelatinous material has spread to whole of the abdomen.”

Dr. Ashish Jakhetiya & Dr. Arun Pandey, trained in treating all kinds of cancer surgery and HIPEC said that, “Administering direct chemotherapy at minimum temp.(42 degree) to the affected region is most effective in certain type of cancer where disease is confined inside the abdomen like cancer of ovary, colon, appendix etc. Not only helps faster recovery but also prevents side effects on the other unaffected organs.”

Dr. Arun Pandey said that, “HIPEC is a technique where a highly concentrated cancer drug is heated and delivered directly into the abdomen during surgery. Unlike the conventional chemotherapy in which drugs are infused into the blood through the veins after surgery to destroy cancer cells, HIPEC delivers the chemotherapy directly to cancer cells in the abdomen. The HIPEC procedure was performed on here as per the International guidelines using dedicated HIPEC machine and the procedure took around 11 hours. In this procedure it is important that the recommended drug concentration and temperature is achieved. If not, the treatment would be ineffective. Moreover, any variation in drug dosage or temperature variations could be fatal. Anesthetist Dr. Naveen Patidar played a very important role by maintaining the patient stable for approximately 10 hours long extensive surgery and again newer high dose chemotherapy was given. He controlled body temperature for safe & early recovery.”

Geetanjali Medical College & Hospital’s CEO Mr. Prateem Tamboli said that, “The hospital is one of the few and finest cancer centers to use this technology at subsidized prices without compromising the safety and quality in any way. The procedure accompanied the team of most skilled and trained at one of the finest institutes, Oncology Surgeons Dr. Ashish Jakhetiya and Dr. Arun Pandey along with Anesthetist Dr. Naveen Patidar.”
