Lord Shiva is not just a deity in Mewar but whole and sole of the state. Eklingji one of the forms of Lord Shiva is considered as King of Mewar. Perhaps this is why Lord Shiva is a highly and widely worshipped lord here. Umpteen number of lord Shiva temples in and around the city vouch for this fact.
En route to Shri Nathdwara on the Ajmer Road, the temple of EklingJi is situated. One has to drive around 21 kilometers to reach here. And the way includes curvy elevated roads with one side high terrain mountains and deep Gorge on the other.
Driven by the devotion, thousands of people commute on foot, some even bare foot, to get a glimpse of their lord Ekling ji. As usual last Saturday which was eve of the Mashivaratri, thousands of devotees left for their long journey to Eklingji on foot. It takes hours and people keep taking rests at places. But there are few who start on a resolution to walk nonstop.
Bappa Rawal had incepted this temple sometime in 734 AD. Then it was renovated to its present form by Maharana Raimal. The temple is also famous tourist spot and almost every tourist guidebook includes this temple in their itinerary.
The construction material of the temple is white stone but the Shiva Linga is made of black stone. The Linga has four faces – West face is considered as lord Bramha, North as Vishnu, East as Sun, and South face is considered as Rudra. There are several small temples in the premises. There’s reservoir on the back of the temple where people come to enjoy picnic.
For the devotees, who took the roadway to temple were relieved by many volunteers who served water, cold drinks, and fruits.
Besides the main Eklingji temple, there are ample forms of lord Shiva with different names. And there are many temples which are not only famous but also are good picnic spots. Generally scenic beauty is found near a Shiva temples and that becomes a picnic spot as well.
Kamalnath Mahadev is said to be the place where demon king Raavan had halted to take a loo break while taking Sitaji to Lanka. Other famous temples of lord Shiva include Gupteshwar Mahadev, Naandeshwar Mahadev, Jhaameshwar Mahadev, Ubeshwar Mahadev, and many more.
There are many temples which are situated within the city and remain crowded everyday due to their high devotional values.
The Hazaareshwar Mahadev temple opposite to the Maharana Bhupal hospital, Mahaakaaleshwar temple on the bank of Fateh Sagar Lake, Neelkanth Mahadev is few to name.
Some 100 kilometers from Udaipur, the temple of Parshuram Mahadev also is famous Shiva temple which is nestled in some terrific rocks. It was both adventure and devotion for all those who visited Parshuram Mahadev temple.
Devotees observed the day long fast. Few broke their fasts in the evening while others only had non-grain food throughout the day. Temples were decorated and chants of Mahamrityunjaya mantra kept the ambiance of the city devotional.
